Mission scrubbed

Final hospital security camera image

The last desperate message received from the hospital complex on the ice-moon Pellor-alto–7b came three hours ago. There has been nothing from the hyperspace transponder since. The navigation beacon fail only minutes after the security cameras went blank.

The best reconstruction of events currently available suggests the 8-1-8 nanoid virus gained entry the hospital complex via the hydrogen mines on the sublevel-19. One of the miners who extract the moon’s ices to replenish the hospital’s hydrogen atmosphere was fatally injured by falling machinery.

However, hospital porters sounded the alarm as they went to transfer the body to a slab in the mortuary. Garbled reports say the earliest symptoms of the infection were changes in skin colour followed by the growth of spikes. Doctors only arrived at the scene in time to be horribly killed and re-animated.

Eden's Avatar appeared in the audience chamber

Eden’s Avatar appeared in the audience chamber

The avatar of Eden appeared in the audience chamber unannounced to cancel our rescue mission to the hospital complex. The message reached our ship just as we entered the Pellor-alto system. After Eden stated that the minimum safe distance for the destruction of the moon would be seventeen-million klicks the captain put our Assault cruiser engine’s to full power as he turned us around.

The captain did take the time to deploy a scientific probe that will continue its approach to the moon under its own momentum. Scientists are very interested to see what happens to the moon. Our owner’s race very rarely demonstrate their powers.

High level sources indicate Eden is concerned that the 8-1-8 zombie virus may be in the process of converting the moon into more infected nebula stalkers, like the original source infection.

The original stalker vanished from the 24 systems owned by Architect Krull. Rumours have it that the new owner of the Earth exclusion zone has taken it for his company’s specimen repository.

Researchers on a dark lonely asteroid at the edge of the Earth exclusion zone think they have a clue to the identity of the human mission specialist on route to the ice moon Pellor-alto–7b.

Months back, the listening post intercepted a text communication labelled “The Brigadier and the Pit”. After it was deciphered references to a female human that exploded at a press conference were found. It is understood that it is very rare for humans to spontaneously explode. The humans seem to be linking the event to what we call nanoid blasting venom. Indicating the person that exploded was modified by either of the two common nanoid viruses.

Bad day to be a reporter

Last week, I unwisely accepted a special assignment for the interplanetary news network. They wanted someone to report on the mission to the ice moon Pellor-alto–7b. When I clicked accept, it said nothing about accelerating out of orbit in an Assault cruiser alongside twelve heavily armed Pellor troopers and being briefed on zero-gravity drop procedures. I had assumed I would be watching events maybe from high orbit and not dropping onto an ice moon infested with the zombie virus alongside the troopers.

And that turned out to be the good bit!

I soon found out why we will not be joined by our mission specialist until just before the final briefing. The mission specialist is in a specially lined chamber in the ship’s hold that can withstand corrosive atmospheres. I am on the same ship as an oxygen breathing life-form.  Apparently, the ship collected it from a dwarf planet at the edge of the Earth exclusion zone.

Ok, so sometimes I panic a bit and imagine the worst. I was sure that when the captain came over he was going to reassure us that it the thing in hold 4 was just some innocuous little creature that can sniff out the 8-1-8 zombie virus. Oh no, The captain was still visibly shaking as he explained the ship had been ordered to approach the Earth exclusion zone in silent running mode, and to maintain radio silence until clear. Architect Krull would prefer that the creatures inside the zone do not know about the existence of us his pets on nearby systems.

At that point the captain took a deep breath of the ships recycled hydrogen before blurting out his orders were to take a magnetometer with him out onto the surface and the creature would identify itself. He had been out there on the surface of this dwarf planet for only a few seconds when the large two legged thing appeared out of the methane mist clearing large craters in its stride, coming straight at him, before bouncing to halt in the low gravity. Then he thought the end had come, his hearts had failed with the shock, as terrible burst of pain went through him. The captain held up the magnetometer. The display showing “8-0-8 level 2 nausea field” in big letters.

So now you understand why a my never click the “Accept mission” button ever again. Not only am I on the same ship as a human, but it an enhanced nanoid-reanimation of a human.

The captain still shaking directed us to suit up, and join him on the drop deck for the final briefing with the human. I could not use my phone in the vacuum, so the sketch I am holding in the picture above shows the scene with the enhanced human not bothered by the vacuum.

You can’t imagine being that close to something so alien. Humans seem to be built backwards with their spine running down the back of the body. They just move so fast and jerkily, we all thought we were going to die at one point but it seemed to just have an itch.

Hospital moon in lockdown

Hospital in total lock-down

News just in, reaching us on the interplanetary news network.

The exact cause of the current emergency is unclear but we understand that multiple agencies requested the lock-down and quarantine of the ice moon  Pellor-alto–7b simultaneously.

The alarm was first raised when 5 maintenance engineers failed to return from a surface mission. They were sent out to investigate seismic events on the moon’s surface after a nebula stalker made a close approach.

Scientist investigating ten-thousand year old reports from that last time a nebula stalker entered the 24 systems owned by Architect Krull, also hit the panic button.

The ancient reports stated that the original visitor used a magnetic propulsion system. However, when a science probe approached the stalker, a very familiar magnetic signature was detected, a nanoid nausea-field. As the nebula stalker carried no warning markings it must be assumed to be infected with nanoid strain 8-1-8, also know as the zombie virus, and not the benign 8-0-8 re-animation virus.

Nanoid 8-0-8

Nanoid 8-0-8

The third group to sound the alarm were the breading enforcement office. They were concerned the seismic events were parasites from the stalker landing on the moon.

Architect Krull spent millions of years breading us his hydrogen breathing pets in direct defiance of the laws of evolution at work outside his systems. Therefore any creature that has evolved as part of a competitive food chain is highly unwelcome.

Those seeking help from our owner in the audience chamber can only hope the worst case scenario has not come true just as our owner is fading due to great age.

Inside the Earth exclusion zone, more information on 8-1-8 zombies can be found under the title “The Brigadier and the pit”

Nanoid animates

Nanoid 8-0-8

Nanoid 8-0-8

Inside territories own by Architect Krull, dying or dead creatures restored to life by nanoid particle machines are rare. Almost exclusively, those that do exist are animated-by / infested with the 8-0-8 virus. 8-0-8 animates are normally distinguishable from the standard creature by red warning markings. Although the virus hybrids have extra abilities over the original, they are not normally considered any form of risk to the population.

However, there is now concern in some quarters that 8-1-8 zombie virus may have been brought into the system by visitors from inside the Earth exclusion zone. It is known that the last engagement between the two strains wiped out 95% of all life inside the zone 65 million years ago as collateral damage. The 8-1-8 zombie variants carry no warning markings, but often display deformities. They are considered hostile to all forms of life not already infected with 8-1-8.

It is reported that earlier today an 8-0-8 human hybrid by the name of Brigadier Watts caused some concern to the palace guards when he arrived via a micro wormhole to meet with representatives of Architect Krull.
